Radio Free Africa Network 1377 kHz verified with an undet. Letter in 75 days. P.Robic-AUT direct to QIP Jan 00
- We need a current reception report to respond. We do not keep on-air records for more than 30 days to enable verification. - Plse bear with us and try to monitor again and send the report to us by e-mail and will respond accordingly. Thanks Diallo of Radio Free Africa. Mwanza, Tanzania. M.Elbe-D A-DX-ML Mrz 00

Do you remember the mailing of M. Schöch informing us that he received a QSL-letter from Voice of Tanzania Zanzibar in which they appealed the DX-comunity to do some printing of QSL-cards ? If you do remember that, then you will probably also recall that I have taken up this challenge and send them a package of some 100 colour QSL cards. Today I was very glad to see that one of these cards arrived back here after a trip of 10 weeks. It was accompanied by a kind letter from Mister Abdulrah'man M. Said in which he expressed his thanks and stated that 'this will mark another era to Radio DX Listening Clubs' because they will be able to supply the needed cards. So if you want a QSL-card from Sauti ya Tanzania Zanzibar, write now ! If you want a picture from this QSL, ask me and I'll send you the file. Good DX ! G.Schotmans-BEL HCDX-ML Jun 98
At the end of march I reported the reception of a verification letter from The Voice of Tanzania Zanzibar (after only 25 days, on 11734 kHz). There they asked me to do the printing of QSLs for them. Belgian DXer Guido Schotmans took over this task and designed a beautiful colored qsl card showing a map of Zanzibar and a tranmitter place on the island. It seems, he even somehow managed to get the cards to Zanzibar since today I already received one of those newly designed qsl cards from them ! It was stamped with station seal and signed by A.M.Said. Together with it I received a copy of a thank you letter to Guido in Belgium. Quote 'This will mark another era to Radio DX listening club because we will be able to supply the needed qsls all over the world.' Radio Tanzania Zanzibar called me 'a real gentleman' in their letter. But its easy to spread a message on the net, but not so easy to deliver cards to Zanzibar. So we should all thank you Guido Schotmans ! Add : The Voice of Tanzania Zanzibar, Department of Broadcasting, P.O.Box 1178, Zanzibar, Tanzania M.Schöch-D HCDX-ML Jun 98

Also, was will der Mensch mehr ? E.Gehrig-E direct to QIP Mrz 99
I received a QSL letter from R. R. Tanzania-Zanzibar : the QSL Card was designed by Dutch DXer Guido Schotmans and there were only 100 made. I have one and two or three other German DXers also received one. When I visited the RTZ last year they still had plenty of them. It seems they only send them out to selected people; -) RTZ remains a hard to QSL station. Good luck ! E.Gehrig-E A-DX-ML Jan 01
It was me [who designed the RTZ qsl card]. I have sent 100 pieces to Zanzibar in the spring of 98. But there are only very few DX'ers that have received one of those QSL. Enzio Gehrig made a trip to Zanzibar about a year ago and he assured me that there is still a stock of those QSL. It looks like they are using the QSL's for special occasions. And there is one big problem with reception reports. Almost nobody speaks English at RTZ. Somebody not in service at RTZ is translating reports into Swahili, and that takes time and a lot of trouble. So be patient. You can also try to write in Swahili. Maybe you can find a contact on the net that will translate your report. G.Schotmans-BEL HCDX-ML Jan 01

Hello Daniele, Congratulations with your new QSL. You are one of the few that received the card that was designed by me. It's very strange, but it seems that, since I have sent that pile of QSL cards to Zanzibar some two years ago, only appx. 10 DX'ers received my card in reply to their RR's, while others received a QSL-letter. It's some kind of a lottery. Enzio Gehrig deserves also a part of the credit for keeping the ties with the DX-community alive. BTW : I thought that obtaining a Zanzibar QSL would become much more difficult because of the recent uprising on the island, but it turned out to be the opposite : the last few weeks, there were more reports on Zanzibar QSL's. Address: Sauti Ya Tanzania Zanzibar, P.O.Box 1178, Zanzibar, Tanzania. Signed by Khalid Hassan Rajab. [..] This QSL card has an interesting history. The station can be received on shortwave throughout the world, but for a long time people at it had no knowledge about reception verification. In spring of 1998, Belgian DXer Guido Schotmans designed a QSL card for Zanzibar, printed 100 copies and donated them to the station. In 1999, Spanish DXer Enzio Gehrig had a five-day visit to Zanzibar. Certainly, he visited its main radio station. Talking to its employees, Enzio realised why they respond to reception reports so rarely. It's because Ali Bakari Muombwa, the person responsible for incoming mail, cannot read in English well enough. He has to ask other people to translate listeners' reports into Swahili, and that causes delays and other problems. ?-? Signal DX 003 Mrz 01
Nevertheless, Enzio was content with results of his trip. He especially mentioned that all people he met there were very friendly and hospitable. When Enzio realized that people at the station are not aware of how to deal with QSL cards donated by Guido, he explained them all details of QSLing technique. In his turn, Mr.Rajab promised that all correct reports would be confirmed with that card. On the contrary, Khalid Hassan Rajab, SW transmitter chief, speaks English very well. (He has a training course in the US). Many DXers recommend to address letters to Mr.Rajab personally, but there's no 100 percent reply guarantee — writing responses is not his job at all. Giovanni d'Amico, from Switzerland, was the first DXer who reported in hard-core-dx about the verification written on this card. It was in March 2000. But DXers community still considers Sauti Ya Tanzania Zanzibar as a hard-to-QSL station. According to various sources, some people received that colorful QSL for their reports, while others had to be satisfied with nothing more than an official form confirmation letter. A kind of lottery? (- info taken from hard-core-dx and BC-DX archives) D.Mezin-RUS Signal DX 003 Mrz 01
